Concussion Awareness & Protocol
BBFC supports the CDC "HEADS UP" Campaign recommended by US Soccer to recognize and reduce brain injuries. All parents, coaches and players are asked to be aware of what can cause a concussion and what signs to look for.
If an Athlete is suspected to have a concussion, either observed by a coach, parent, referee, or another player the following action should be taken.
Immediate Actions:
- Remove the athlete from the field of play immediately.
- Do not let the athlete return to play the same day.
- Assess for concussion symptoms, such as:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Difficulty concentrating
- Sensitivity to light or noise
- Balance problems
Medical Evaluation:
- The athlete should be evaluated by a healthcare professional, such as a doctor, nurse, or athletic trainer.
- The healthcare professional will ask about the athlete's symptoms, medical history, and perform a physical exam.
- They may also order imaging tests, such as a CT scan or MRI, if necessary.
Return to Play Protocol:
- The athlete should not return to play until they are symptom-free and have been cleared by a healthcare professional.
- A gradual return-to-play protocol should be followed, which may include:
- Rest for 24-48 hours
- Light aerobic exercise, such as walking or swimming
- Sport-specific drills without contact
- Full-contact practice
- The athlete should monitor their symptoms closely and stop activity if they experience any recurrence.
Other Considerations:
- Athletes who have had multiple concussions may be at increased risk for future injuries.
- It is important to educate athletes about concussion symptoms and how to prevent them.
- Parents and coaches should be aware of concussion protocol and know when to seek medical attention.
Note: This protocol is a general guideline and may vary depending on the specific circumstances of the athlete and the healthcare provider. It is essential to follow the specific instructions of the healthcare professional in all cases.
